Key Takeaways
- 68% without a click: Less than a third of all Google searches in 2026 still lead to a website visit, according to Search Engine Land (2026).
- 265 million clicks lost: Google's AI Overviews cost German websites 265 million organic clicks every month according to Sistrix: AI Overviews in Deutschland (2026).
- Position 1 loses 60%: The click-through rate for position 1 drops from 27% to 11% as soon as an AI Overview appears, according to the Sistrix-Analyse (2026).
- Act now: SMEs should shift from pure Google ranking to AI visibility now, because according to Search Engine Land (2024) traditional search engine volume will decline by 25% by 2026.
Your website is on page 1 of Google. Your ranking is stable, maybe even position 2 or 3 for your most important keyword. And yet you are getting fewer visitors than a year ago.
If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. We have been observing the same trend across several of our clients for months: rankings hold steady, but traffic drops. The cause is not a technical error or an algorithm update. It is a fundamental shift in how Google displays search results.
Google is answering more and more questions directly on the search results page. Through AI Overviews, Featured Snippets, and other AI-powered formats, users get their answer without ever visiting a website. The result is called Zero Click Search. And it is changing the rules for every business that depends on organic traffic.
Why is your website losing visitors even though you rank well?
The Zero Click Search phenomenon
A Zero Click Search is a search query that Google answers directly in the search results. The user types a question, gets the answer displayed immediately, and never leaves Google. No click on your website. No visit, no inquiry, no contact.
This is not a new phenomenon. Back in 2019, a SparkToro analysis showed that 49% of all Google searches ended without a click. Since then, the trend has accelerated massively. In the first quarter of 2026, the zero-click rate is at 68%, as current data from Search Engine Land (2026) shows.
How AI Overviews and Featured Snippets intercept clicks
The strongest driver of this trend is Google's AI Overviews. Since May 2025, Google has also been showing AI-generated summaries directly above the search results in Germany. These answers compile information from multiple websites and present it to the user without them having to visit any of those sites.
Featured Snippets have been doing something similar for longer. But AI Overviews go a crucial step further: they combine multiple sources, answer more complex questions, and thus cover significantly more search queries. According to an Ahrefs study of 300,000 keywords, 99.2% of all keywords that trigger an AI Overview are informational in nature, as Ahrefs: AI Overviews Reduce Clicks by 34.5% (2025) shows.
In client projects, I often see companies proudly pointing to their Google ranking while overlooking the declining visitor numbers in their analytics software. Rankings alone now say little about how many people actually land on your website.
How big is the problem in Germany?
265 million lost clicks per month
The numbers for Germany are clear. A comprehensive analysis by Sistrix, which evaluated over 100 million keywords, puts a figure on the damage: AI Overviews cost German websites 265 million organic clicks per month. These are visitors who used to click on organic search results but now get their answers directly from Google, according to Sistrix: AI Overviews in Deutschland (2026).
The average across all industries is 6.6% fewer organic clicks. That initially sounds manageable. But this average conceals enormous differences: while e-commerce sites are barely affected, health portals, education sites, and information-heavy websites lose up to 24% of their organic clicks.
Currently, AI Overviews are displayed for around 20% of all keywords in Germany. In the long-tail segment, the rate is even 30%. And 78.6% of these AI Overviews appear above the organic search results, directly in the user's line of sight.
Additional studies confirm the trend
Internationally, the picture is even more dramatic. The latest data from SparkToro, based on clickstream data from Similarweb for January to April 2026, show: 68% of all Google searches in the US end without a click. In 2024, it was still 60%. That represents an increase of 12.5% in just two years, the fastest acceleration of this phenomenon in the last decade.
For the DACH region, the e-dialog Traffic Study 2026 provides the most comprehensive numbers to date. The agency evaluated over one billion sessions from around 70 companies in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The result: organic traffic in Germany dropped by 6.1% year over year. Retail even lost 12%, as e-dialog: AI Search, Zero Click und Traffic-Einbruch (2026) documents. At the same time, paid search spending in Germany rose by 14.5% as companies compensate for the loss through paid advertising.
Another German study confirms the trend from the early phase. The Wordsmattr: Exklusivstudie Google KI-Übersicht (2025) analyzed 125 SEO-optimized landing pages immediately after the launch of AI Overviews in Germany. The result: 17.8% fewer clicks alongside only 1.2% fewer impressions. The websites are still being displayed, but users are no longer clicking.
What does position 1 on Google really mean today?
For a long time, the rule was: whoever holds position 1 gets the most traffic. That is no longer true.
CTR loss due to AI Overviews
The Sistrix data show that the click-through rate for position 1 drops from an average of 27% to just 11% as soon as an AI Overview is displayed. That is a loss of nearly 60%. An Ahrefs analysis of 300,000 keywords confirms the effect: the click-through rate for position 1 fell by 34.5% solely due to the introduction of AI Overviews, according to Ahrefs (2025).
Positions below are affected as well. For positions 2 to 5, click-through rates for keywords with an AI Overview are consistently 25 to 30% below average. While in a normal search 57% of users click on an organic result, for searches with an AI Overview it is only 33%. Nearly half of all organic clicks are lost.
More visibility, fewer visitors
Many companies confuse Google visibility with website traffic. In the past, those were almost the same thing. Not anymore. The Wordsmattr study illustrates this effect particularly clearly: impressions for some pages even increased by up to 50%, while clicks fell by 17.8%. Your website is being displayed more often, but visited less frequently.
Gartner predicted as early as 2024 that search volume on traditional search engines would decline by 25% by 2026, driven by AI chatbots and other virtual agents, as Search Engine Land (2024) reported. Good search engine optimization remains the foundation for Google to recognize your content. But it no longer guarantees traffic.
Which industries and businesses are hit hardest?
Informational vs. transactional search queries
The decisive factor is search intent. Informational search queries like 'How much does a website cost?' or 'How does SEO work?' are now answered by Google itself. Transactional search queries like 'Hire a web design agency' or 'Book SEO consulting' still lead to clicks because Google cannot offer its own solution here.
The Sistrix analysis shows the range: recipe websites lose only 1% of their clicks because users want to follow recipes step by step. Health portals, on the other hand, lose up to 30%. Parenting and baby advice sites see over 24% click loss. The more easily a question can be answered in a few sentences, the more likely it becomes a Zero Click Search.
Service providers and B2B companies
For B2B service providers the situation is particularly serious. A large share of B2B search queries is informational. Potential customers research solutions, compare providers, and look into pricing and processes. Google now answers many of these questions directly.
Retail in the DACH region recorded a 12% organic traffic decline according to the e-dialog study, the steepest drop. Education follows with 7%, tourism with 4%. Local search queries like 'dentist Hamburg Altona' or 'tax advisor near me' are less affected so far because Google continues to show the local search result pack with map and contact details. But that could change too. Google's AI mode is being expanded continuously.
According to BrightEdge (2025), AI search engines currently account for less than 1% of referral traffic. Organic search remains the most important channel for conversions. At the same time, the study emphasizes that the rise of AI search actually reinforces the value of traditional SEO optimization because all major AI models rely on traditional search indexes. The problem is not AI competition, but that Google itself is passing fewer and fewer clicks to external websites through AI Overviews.
From Evelan's day-to-day work
For a mid-sized client in the service sector, we built the website from the ground up with a clear information architecture. Structured content with FAQ sections, meaningful metadata, clean heading hierarchy, and fast load times across all devices. Every page answers a specific question and is designed as a self-contained information unit.
As a result, the website is set up from the start so that search engines can reliably crawl, understand, and classify the content as a relevant source. The client benefits from stable rankings and acquires the majority of new customers through organic search.
What can SMEs do now?
Shifting from Google ranking to AI visibility
The most important step for SMEs is a change in perspective. Instead of optimizing solely for Google rankings, companies need to prepare their content so that AI systems recognize and cite them as a trustworthy source. The concept is called AI visibility and encompasses visibility in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other AI-powered search systems. At its core, it is about Answer Engine Optimization: preparing content so that answer engines use it as a source.
The difference between traditional SEO and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) lies in the goal. When it comes to GEO vs. SEO, it is not an either-or. SEO optimizes for a ranking in a list. GEO optimizes for being cited as a source in an AI-generated answer. Internationally, this approach is also known as Answer Engine Optimization. The two are not mutually exclusive, but GEO is becoming increasingly important.
Three first steps
First, you should check how much your traffic is already affected. Compare your organic traffic over the last 12 months in Google Search Console. Pay special attention to informational keywords where the click-through rate has dropped while impressions have remained stable. A specialized GEO agency can handle this analysis for you and identify the relevant GEO vs. SEO opportunities.
Second, you should structure your content so that AI systems can use it as a source. Clear answers to specific questions, solid data with source citations, structured formats like FAQ sections and tables. This increases the chance of being linked as a source in AI Overviews. That is exactly what Answer Engine Optimization looks like in practice.
Third, you should reduce your dependence on a single traffic channel. Companies that rely exclusively on Google traffic are the most vulnerable. A combination of organic search, AI visibility, social media, and email marketing makes your business more resilient. A GEO agency can help you build these channels strategically.
Why waiting is the worst strategy
This development will not reverse itself. Google earns more money when users stay on the platform longer. Ad revenue is rising, investors are satisfied, and the trend toward AI answers will intensify. Those who still delay the GEO vs. SEO decision are losing valuable time. Companies that partner with a GEO agency now secure a decisive advantage.
Sistrix founder Johannes Beus puts it bluntly, as quoted in OMR: AI Overviews Traffic-Verluste (2026): 'The traffic that is now going to Google will never come back. That is the harsh reality.' Companies that fail to act now are losing visibility every month that will be very difficult to regain.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. SEO remains the foundation for Google to recognize and index your content at all. Without good SEO, you will not be visible in either traditional search results or AI Overviews. But SEO alone is no longer enough to guarantee traffic. It needs to be complemented by measures to improve AI visibility.
