Key Points at a Glance

Your website ranks on page 1 of Google. Yet you’re getting fewer inquiries. The reason: More and more users are getting their answers directly from ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews without ever clicking on a link. Gartner forecasts a 25% decline in traditional search volume by the end of 2026. At the same time, according to seo-manager.info, AI search traffic grew by 527% year-over-year.

For businesses, this means that if you don’t appear in AI-powered searches, you lose visibility, trust, and revenue. AI SEO goes beyond traditional search engine optimization and combines technical fundamentals with GEO optimization. This guide explains what AI visibility actually means, why traditional SEO alone is no longer enough, and what steps you can take today. You’ll learn what technical foundations your website needs, how to optimize content for AI systems, and why website architecture plays a crucial role.

What does AI visibility mean for businesses?

AI visibility describes how prominent your company is in the responses from AI search systems. Is your content cited when a potential customer asks ChatGPT for a solution? Does your expertise appear in Google AI Overviews? Does Perplexity recommend your service? The answers to these questions are increasingly determining business success.

The term “AI visibility” became established as the German standard in 2025 and 2026. According to aiseo.hamburg, search volume for the term rose by 364% year-over-year. Deloitte Germany now also uses AI visibility as a strategic framework for management consulting. The technical terms GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) describe the specific optimization measures that enable AI visibility.

How ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews Work

According to Search Engine Land (2025), the three leading AI search systems operate differently but share the same goal: to provide users with a direct answer rather than redirecting them to external websites.

ChatGPT uses a large language model that has been trained on billions of text examples. To obtain up-to-date information, it also performs web searches and provides links to the sources it uses. According to OpenAI, ChatGPT now has 900 million weekly active users. When a decision-maker asks ChatGPT, “Which agency can build a website with a multilingual CMS?”, the system determines which providers to recommend based on source quality, recency, and citability.

Google AI Overviews work differently: Here, an AI summarizes the existing search results and displays the summary prominently above the traditional rankings. According to SISTRIX, AI Overviews already appear in about 20% of all search queries in Germany. Unlike with ChatGPT, as a website operator, you cannot directly influence whether Google includes your content in an AI Overview. However, you can create the conditions that make inclusion more likely.

Perplexity combines both. The system searches the web in real time and generates a response with direct source references. Each statement is accompanied by a numbered source citation, which makes Perplexity particularly appealing for professional research.

Why this matters for your business

The numbers speak for themselves. SISTRIX has calculated that German websites lose 265 million clicks per month due to AI Overviews. At the same time, DACH data from feller.systems shows that visitors who arrive at a website via AI systems have a conversion rate of 14.2%. By comparison, the conversion rate via traditional Google search is 2.8%.

AI visibility is therefore not just a marketing buzzword. It is a measurable business factor. Those recommended by ChatGPT reach decision-makers who have already done their research and are looking for a solution. The inquiries from these visitors are of higher quality because the AI-powered research process has already narrowed down the options. Those who remain invisible lose these leads to competitors who actively utilize AI search systems.

We explain how you can check whether your website already appears in ChatGPT in a separate article.

Why is traditional SEO alone no longer enough?

Search engine optimization remains important. Without a solid SEO foundation, there is no basis on which AI visibility can be built. The problem: Traditional SEO optimizes for Google rankings. AI visibility requires additional measures that go beyond keyword placement and link building.

Zero-Click Search: The Problem for German Companies

Zero-click search refers to search queries in which the user no longer visits a website because the answer appears directly in the search results. According to statistiken-aktuell.de, the zero-click rate in Germany stands at 58%. With AI Overviews now accounting for about 20% of German search queries, this problem is becoming even more acute.

That’s because AI Overviews don’t just answer simple factual questions. Increasingly, they also provide answers to complex advisory questions that have reliably driven traffic to company websites in the past. Typical search queries such as “CMS for medium-sized businesses” or “planning a website relaunch” are answered directly, without the searcher having to visit a provider’s website.

This is particularly critical for B2B companies because information-driven keywords often represent the first point of contact with a potential customer. If this contact occurs in an AI overview and your website isn’t cited as a source, you don’t exist for that prospect. Our upcoming article on zero-click search and its implications for businesses will provide a deeper insight into this phenomenon.

Google rankings and AI citations are drifting apart

For a long time, ranking first on Google meant maximum visibility. According to SISTRIX, the click-through rate for the top position in AI Overviews has dropped from 27% to 11%. That’s a loss of more than half of the clicks.

More importantly, the sources cited by AI systems do not always correspond to the top rankings on Google. ChatGPT relies on its own evaluation criteria. Perplexity favors pages with clear statements and verifiable facts. Although Google AI Overviews uses its own search index, it weights factors such as citability and structure more heavily than in traditional rankings.

The result: A page can rank third on Google and still be the primary source for a ChatGPT response. Conversely, a page that ranks first may be completely absent from AI responses. Specifically, this means that traditional SEO and AI SEO (often referred to as GEO optimization or Generative Engine Optimization) are two distinct disciplines, even though they overlap. Our introduction to GEO explains the methodology behind this new discipline.

What are the three pillars of AI visibility?

AI visibility isn’t achieved through a single lever. It rests on three pillars that work together: technical foundations, credibility, and content quality. Deloitte Germany has defined AI Visibility as a strategic framework that connects these three dimensions. For medium-sized companies, these measures can be implemented pragmatically if the priorities are set correctly.

Structured Data and Technical Fundamentals

Structured data helps AI systems understand and correctly categorize your content. The FAQ schema indicates that a page answers questions. The Organization schema provides company information such as address, year founded, and industry. The Article schema identifies editorial content by author and publication date. The Product schema describes services or products in a machine-readable format.

In projects with B2B clients, I’ve noticed that structured data is the fastest way to improve AI visibility. Many corporate websites haven’t even implemented basic Schema markup. This is often not due to a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of prioritization. Schema markup is dismissed as a “technical detail,” even though it can make the difference between visibility and invisibility in AI responses.

The aiseo.hamburg Market Analysis 2026 shows that search volume for GEO optimization has increased by 147% year-over-year. Demand for this type of optimization is growing rapidly, but supply is lagging behind. Companies that act now will gain a real competitive edge.

In addition to Schema markup, technical factors such as load time and Core Web Vitals play a role. AI crawlers evaluate a page’s technical quality before adding its content to their knowledge base. A slow or poorly structured page is indexed less frequently. Our article “Optimizing Your Website for AI” provides a detailed technical checklist.

E-E-A-T for AI Systems

E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. Google has been using these criteria for years to evaluate web content. AI systems place even greater emphasis on them because they must determine which sources are worthy of citation and which are not.

For your business, this means: Authors need profiles that demonstrate verifiable expertise. Content needs verifiable sources. The website needs trust signals such as customer reviews, certifications, and industry memberships. ChatGPT and Perplexity don’t just check individual articles; they evaluate the entire website and its reputation online.

Backlinks and brand mentions (branded web mentions) play a central role in this. When other websites link to your content or mention your company by name, AI systems interpret this as a sign of trust. The Zyppy meta-analysis (2026) confirms: Websites with a strong backlink profile and frequent brand mentions are cited as sources in AI responses significantly more often. Mentions in trade publications, industry directories, and on partner websites are particularly effective.

If your CEO publishes a professional article, his author profile should include his education, professional experience, and publications. AI systems use these signals to assess expertise and weigh recommendations. For more on this, see our article “AI Content and Google Rankings: What the Data Really Shows.”

Creating Citable Content

AI systems prefer to cite content that is easy to summarize. A meta-analysis of 54 studies (Zyppy, 2026) shows that clearly structured content with distinct sections receives significantly more AI citations. In practice, this means: clear statements instead of vague phrasing, facts with source citations instead of unsubstantiated claims, and direct answers to specific questions instead of long introductions.

One effective approach is the “answer-first” structure. Each section begins with the main point, followed by reasoning and supporting evidence. AI systems process this structure particularly well because they find the relevant information right in the first sentence.

Write each paragraph so that it makes sense on its own, without the rest of the article. If an AI quotes your paragraph out of context, the statement should still be accurate. Avoid relative references such as “as mentioned above” and use standalone, factually correct statements.

FAQ sections with structured markup are particularly effective. AI systems recognize question-and-answer pairs and prefer to use them as sources for citations. Add 5 to 8 frequently asked questions with precise, source-backed answers to your service pages.

How to Get Started with AI Visibility in 5 Steps

The transition to AI visibility doesn't have to be comprehensive right away. These five steps serve as a starting point and deliver initial measurable results within a few weeks.

Step 1. Check your current visibility

Before you optimize, you need to take stock. Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity about the topics your company should be associated with. Is your website mentioned? Is your content cited? Or do the systems recommend only your competitors?

More systematic tools like SISTRIX AI Check analyze which AI responses mention your domain. The aiseo.hamburg market analysis shows that the search term "AI Visibility Tool" has grown by 617%. Demand for measurement tools is rising rapidly. Find out how to systematically measure your AI visibility in our upcoming article, “Measuring AI Visibility.”

Step 2. Add structured data

Implement JSON-LD schema markup for the most important page types. Start with Organization (company page), FAQPage (pages with frequently asked questions), Article (blog posts with an author and date), and LocalBusiness (if you have a physical location).

Every Schema markup provides AI systems with a machine-readable summary of your content. This increases the likelihood that your page will be used as a source. The effort required is manageable: For a typical corporate website with a blog, basic Schema markup can be implemented in just a few hours.

Step 3. Rewrite content to make it citable

Revise your most important pages using the "Answer-First" principle. Each section begins with a clear statement. Statistics are backed up by sources. Technical terms are defined the first time they appear. Key points are placed at the beginning of a paragraph, not at the end.

FAQ sections are particularly effective. AI systems recognize question-answer pairs and prefer to use them as sources for citations. Add 5 to 8 frequently asked questions with precise answers to your service pages. Make sure each answer is understandable on its own and, ideally, includes a source citation.

Step 4. Allow AI crawlers

Check your robots.txt file. Many websites unknowingly block AI crawlers such as GPTBot (OpenAI), PerplexityBot, or Google Extended. If these crawlers don't have access, your content won't appear in AI responses.

Be sure to explicitly allow at least GPTBot and PerplexityBot. Google AI Overviews uses the standard Googlebot, so no adjustments are usually necessary here. Also check whether your hosting provider or firewall is blocking AI crawlers. Some CDN services and security solutions categorize all bot traffic as unwanted, thereby blocking even the crawlers that could increase your visibility.

Step 5. Measure regularly

AI visibility is not a one-time project. The algorithms of AI systems change, new platforms emerge, and competitors are also optimizing their strategies. Schedule a monthly review to examine the most important search queries in ChatGPT and Perplexity and document the results.

According to statistiken-aktuell.de, 92% of marketers are planning GEO initiatives, but only 41% are actively implementing them. Those who start tracking performance regularly today will identify opportunities sooner than the competition. Document which search queries result in your website being listed and which do not. Over the course of several months, this will provide a clear picture of where your GEO optimization is effective and where there are still gaps.

A Day in the Life at Evelan

For a B2B client in the consulting industry, we developed a new website using Next.js, Sanity CMS, and Vercel. In addition to the redesign, we integrated an SEO strategy from the very beginning, structured the content for search engines and AI crawlers, and optimized the site for performance. The result: a technical foundation that combines server-side rendering, fast load times, and an SEO-friendly content structure, exactly the prerequisites that also enable AI visibility.

Why does website architecture determine AI visibility?

Many companies focus on content when it comes to AI visibility and overlook the technical foundation. Your website’s architecture determines whether AI systems like ChatGPT or Perplexity can even read your content. Think of it this way: Even the best technical article is useless if the door to your website is closed to AI crawlers.

How your website delivers its content makes all the difference

Some websites load their content in the visitor's browser (client-side rendering). This works for human users, but many AI crawlers don’t understand this loading process. They only see a blank page, even though everything looks normal to the visitor. Your text, tables, and FAQ sections remain invisible to these systems.

The solution is called server-side rendering (SSR). With this approach, the page content is prepared on the server and delivered ready to view. The AI crawler immediately receives the complete text without having to reload anything. Technologies such as Next.js, Nuxt, and SvelteKit make this possible.

Static websites also work well because their content is fully generated when the page is created. Pure single-page applications (SPAs), where all content is loaded in the browser, can be problematic. If your website is based on this technology, switching to SSR should be a priority.

How Your CMS Affects AI Visibility

The content management system (CMS) determines how flexibly you can prepare your content for AI systems. A headless CMS, such as Sanity or Contentful, separates content management from presentation. This gives you full control over the technical structure of your pages, the structured data, and the metadata.

Traditional CMS platforms like WordPress can also support AI visibility, but they often require additional plugins. Their limitations become apparent when dealing with complex requirements such as multilingual support or large amounts of structured data.

Choosing a CMS is a strategic decision that should be made early in the project. Based on our experience with over 60 client projects at Evelan, we know that if you wait until after the design phase to select a CMS, you’ll have to make compromises regarding AI optimization that are difficult to correct later on.

Frequently Asked Questions

The cost depends on the current state of your website. Structured data and FAQ blocks can often be added with a few hours of work. A comprehensive GEO audit with content optimisation is in the four-figure range at most agencies. The highest costs arise when the technical foundation has to be built first, for example through a migration to server-side rendering.
